How to Make Product Images Sharper Without Changing Their Appearance
Real tests showing how Crisp mode sharpens product photos and graphics while keeping edges faithful, plus when to prefer Classic for transparent PNGs.
Blurry or soft product images usually need sharpening, not redrawing. We ran a product image through the real pipeline in Crisp, Classic, and Creative modes and recorded what each one did to edges, textures, and colors.
What causes soft product images?
Most product photos are soft for two reasons:
- Downscaled sources — a 4000 px master compressed to 1024 px loses edge contrast at 1:1 viewing.
- JPEG compression — blockiness and ringing around edges survive even high-quality recompression.
An upscaler that adds or reinterprets detail can "fix" these problems by inventing texture, which changes how the product looks. That is exactly what you do not want for a catalog.
How we tested
- Input: identical 1024 × 1024 product image
- Modes: Crisp (Recraft Crisp Upscale), Classic (Real-ESRGAN), Creative (Recraft Creative Upscale)
- Output format: WebP (Crisp and Creative), PNG (Classic)
- Date: 2026-08-01
Test images and settings

Crisp mode has no user-selectable scale — it chooses its output settings automatically and delivered a 4096 × 4096 WebP from the 1024 × 1024 input.
Results
| Mode | Output | Credits | Behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crisp | 4096 × 4096 WebP | 1 | Keeps edges and outlines sharp and faithful to the source |
| Classic | 1000 × 876 PNG (test input) | 1 | Traditional super-resolution; preserves transparency |
| Creative | 4096 × 4096 WebP | 30 | May add or reinterpret details, which changes appearance |
The key difference: Crisp sharpens what is already there. Edges stay crisp without fabricating new texture, so the product keeps its real proportions, colors, and materials.
Limitations
- Crisp sharpens the content of the image — heavy JPEG blockiness that is already baked into the pixels remains visible after upscaling.
- For PNG assets with transparency (cut-outs, icons, stickers), Classic mode preserves the alpha channel. Standard and Creative flatten transparent areas to an opaque background.
- Exact text and fine logos can be interpreted rather than reproduced perfectly by any AI upscaler, so keep the sharpest master you have.
Which mode should you choose?
- Catalog photos and graphics that must stay true to the product → Crisp
- Transparent PNG product cut-outs → Classic
- A stylized or artistic version of the product → Creative, with the understanding that details may be reinterpreted
